World War III All Over Again
A couple of days before Mothers’ Day in about 1979, my buddy Dan and I played tennis after school. Walking home from the park, I passed some store or other and walked in. On the small book shelf was a book named, “World War III.” The author was a retired flag officer, though I don’t remember of which branch. The book predicted that the world would come to all-out war, just short of nuclear, in about 1987 or 1988. It went to describe who would win and why. If I remember correctly, the author picked the US over the Soviets 8-7 in double overtime on a controversial power play goal. (But that was in the days before instant replay.)
I bought the book for my mom.
I read it. She didn’t.
But that’s not what this blog is about.
The most searched phrase on Technorati today is “world war iii.” New Gingrich started this over the weekend by declaring that World War III has already begun, and we must align our thought with that reality. A few blogs picked it up on Sunday, and I mentioned it in an update. By Monday, “World War II” was on every political blog, left and right. But there was a big difference in the treatment: Hennessy’s View and a few others seemed almost enthusiastic that we were finally getting down to solving this jihad business once and for all. The left, and even some right wing bloggers, edged toward hysteria.
Calm down, people.
We need an all out war with jihadists, because we and they cannot co-exist. Either we kill them, or they kill us.
We—the US, Israel, and our allies, have what it takes to take what the enemy has. We have the money, the power, and the personnel to wipe the planet clean of the jihadists, including Bill Keller and Frank Rich. What we’ve lacked is the will.
Right after 9/11—for about 30 days—we had the will, but lacked the means. That will has dwindled.
