News of Castro’s impending death–Michelle Malkin displays a graphic of his order turning power over to his brother–delight the hearts of us old Cold Warriors.

In the 1970s and 1980s, American liberals (you know who you are) extolled the virtues of Castro’s healthcare, education, and welfare programs. Conservative reaction was rightful indignation. The ignorance of the American leftists left us breathless. (It still does.) All one need do to get an intellectual overload of the era is check out National Review archives on Find Articles from 1984 and thereabouts. (Ah, the good old days.)

Now, Castro is dying. His half-century of terrorism, despotism, destruction, lying, and receiving Jesse Jackson soon will end. The Bush administration will seize the opportunity to open doors to the post-Castro Cuba–only a theory most of my life–proving its acumen for the subtleties of diplomacy even as its detractors decry its stubbornness.Â

Castro is (soon) dead! Viva la Cuba!
