The Democrats In Chaos

Here’s the first paragraph of a New York Times article on the dysfunction in the DNC.

Lacking a clear route to the selection of a Democratic presidential nominee, the party’s uncommitted superdelegates say they are growing increasingly concerned about the risks of a prolonged fight between Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, and perplexed about how to resolve the conflict.

And these people want to deal with the Middle East?

The story goes on to say that the superdelegates on likely to give the nod to Obama, assuming he still has the lead in elected delegates and popular vote at the end of the primary process.

But the story reveals, subtly, a larger problem for the Democrats.  They cannot win the White House in November.

Many of them said that in deciding whom to support, they would adopt what Mr. Obama’s campaign has advocated as the essential principle: reflecting the will of the voters.

This would indicate Obama will win the nomination if he doesn’t withdraw.  (He might withdraw because of his repeated lies about Rezko and Wright.)  But Obama was never vetted.  The party didn’t dig into his past because they wanted the Great Black Hope.  The media ignored this superstar for the same reason, plus the laziness inherent in reporting.  That left it up to the most vicious vetting corporation ever formed:  Clinton Inc.

Had the Clinton campaign attacked Obama from the outset, his recent "lapses in judgment" would be old news.  Either they would have done him in, or he would have risen above them.  But once he obtained a popular vote lock on the nomination, it was too late to hurl dirt. The only thing these stories can do now is to make him unelectable in the fall.  I believe that mission has been accomplished.

This leaves the DNC with the mother of all quandaries:

1.  If Obama withdraws, large numbers of black Obama supporters will leave the party, at least temporarily.  Without 80 percent of the black vote, Democrats cannot win.

2.  If Obama gets the nomination, he will lose working class whites by the droves.  They will either sit home or, more likely, vote McCain.

3.  If the DNC makes a deal to give the nomination to Hillary, black anger at the party will be more than just apathy.  The convention will be travesty with African-American superdelegates demanding, cajoling, and inciting.  It will be ugly for the country, not just the Democrats.

In the end, the Democrats have only themselves to blame.  Their vilification of George Bush made this election an emotional powder keg.  The superdelegate and proportional delegate rules demonstrate the DNC’s long failure to understand organizational behavior and good order.  They invite chaos unless one candidates sprints to certain delegate-count victory very early in the process.

These "inclusiveness" rules are dangerous even without the demographic divide in the current race.  As this AP story (which MSNBC has pulled from its .com) indicates, the Democratic electorate has moved rather quickly to identification voting:  white women for Hillary, blacks for Obama, the rest confused and feeling left out.

By that accounting, backed by evidence in exit polls, polarized politics is still ingrained, taking bites out of "Yes we can" unity.

The Republicans would be smart to stay out of this mess.  It’s a no-win situation.  The process will hurt the country just when our economy can least afford it.   Smart Americans will rightly blame liberalism and the Democrats.  Let’s hope that blame sticks this time.

UPDATE:  Rick Moran at Rightwing Nuthouse disagrees.  He says Democrats Will Be Fine By November (Probably)

Obama "Nodded In Agreement" At A Wright Anti-American Sermon **UPDATE**

Ace of Spades describes this breaking story as "nuclear" for the Obama campaign.  I agree.

Obama’s only defense in the Rev. Jeremiah Wright scandal was to claim he never heard vitriol spew from Wright’s mouth.  Many pundits, including Obama supporters, warned that any evidence putting Obama in that church during an ant-US, anti-white hate sermon would be Obama’s undoing.  He’d be a proven petty liar.

Looks like he is:

Wright laced into America’s establishment, blaming the "white arrogance" of America’s Caucasian majority for the woes of the world, especially the oppression suffered by blacks. To underscore the point he refers to the country as the "United States of White America." Many in the congregation, including Obama, nodded in apparent agreement as these statements were made.

Obama "Nodded In Agreement" At A Wright Anti-American Sermon

The story comes from an August 2007 story on News Max, (via Autonomist) allowing the left to discount its authenticity. But it will compel other, more acceptable services to hunt down the people involved.  This will end his candidacy, even if he wins the the nomination.

**UPDATE** Gateway Pundits runs down additional holes in Obama’s cover.  The list includes an ABC News story, filed today, that questions Obama’s veracity on three news channels Friday night.  The MSM smells blood.  The ABC Comments include this back-breaker for the Dems:

For the first time in my life, I will be voting for a Republican this November. I am sick and tired of all the hatred, racism, and bigotry in the democratic party.

Left vs. Left

Someone wise once said that when your opponent is hell-bent on destroying himself, let him.

The primary season was just too much for them…
The Left’s most popular blog Daily Kos is imploding faster than the Obama campaign.
The reality-based community is showing clear-cut signs of meltdown.

Gateway Pundit

Recent Rasmussen and Gallop polls support GP’s anecdotal evidence.  In the national tracking polls released yesterday and today, McCain would be either Clinton or Obama by at least 5 percentage points if the election were held today.  That’s an enormous slide for the Democrats.  Just a week ago, either Hillary or Barack would have beaten McCain by 2 percentage point margin.

Part of this shift is just statistical noise.  But part reflects, I think, the public’s distaste for the party of Jim Crow.  If, somehow, Hillary gets the nomination, the violent rhetoric of Rev. Wright will spill over into the streets.

Obama on Fox: Painful ***UPDATE and BUMP: NEW WRIGHT VIDEO FOUND***

( . . . scroll for new video . . . )

I’ll be honest:  I take some glee in seeing Barack Obama’s campaign come undone on national television.  His interview with Major Garrett on Fox News, tonight, though,  was difficult to watch.

The normally eloquent and certain Obama was a stammering fool, carefully choosing his words, trying to remember what he’d said before and what’s been written by his campaign.

Interestingly, Obama refused to state that he would have quit the church had he heard the racist and anti-US sermons we’ve been watching the past two days.  Instead, he said he’d quit if he’d them "repeated."  Garrett gave Obama a second chance to say he’d have left the church if he’d heard such inflammatory sermons.  Again, Obama qualified his answer, saying, "If I heard them repeated."

We can assume, then, that Obama heard Wright’s rants, but since the minister always brought fresh racist material to the pulpit, the junior Senator stuck with it for 20 years.

Just one picture of Obama in the pews while Wright slings hate, and he’s done.

Update:  Michelle Malkin took away the same impression from the Fox Interview:

Wow. You could see Glowbama’s halo flickering. He looked and sounded nervous, shifty, and truth-challenged as he tried to have it both ways with Jeremiah Wright (whom he continued to praise as a “Biblical scholar” and “well-regarded” even as he paid lip service to disavowing him and denied eeeever hearing Wright’s vitriol).

Rasmussen Reports™: Obama’s Numbers Take a Nose Dive **UPATE** McCain Now Tied or Leading Nationally

Obama’s support plummeted overnight, despite the MSM’s "see no evil" act regarding Tony Rezko and Jeremiah Wright

It’s Obama 46% Clinton 45% (see recent daily results). This reflects an unusually sharp change from yesterday’s results when Obama led by eight points and reached the 50% level of support for the first time.

That’s really bad news for Obama.  If either of these stories ever reaches the front pages of a newspaper, he might need to work on his withdrawal speech.

Rasmussen Reports™: The most comprehensive public opinion coverage ever provided for a presidential election.

**UPDATE**  Wander over to RealClearPolitics to see the latest head-to-head numbers.  McCain now leads Obama and is tied with Hillary.  Apparently, the Democrat racism-sexism bloodbath isn’t playing in Peoria.
