Uncle Barry’s Adding Machine Stimulator Regulation Gimmick

leave a comment

A few weeks ago, shortly after his inauguration, Barry “The President” Obama panicked:  the Republicans might talk the people out of the stimulus bill.

Barry moved quickly.  But Barry is an organizer, not an engineer.  He’s the cheerleader, not the quarterback.  He moves mobs, not nations.  And when panicked, he fell apart.

Barry decided to announce that life as we know it would economically end the Day After The Stimulus Bill Is Defeated.  The “greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression,” was a convenient bludgeon for Barry to use as a candidate against the two men least responsible for it:  Bush and McCain.  Now, that crisis was his to fix.

“A crisis into a catastrophe"

His words.  If Congress failed to pass a near-trillion dollar spending spree, then financial ruin would be upon us.

Congress passed it. The economic slide into depression accelerated.

Thanks, Barry.  Even Robert J. Samuelson – who was our Krugman when I was in college – is kind of appalled at the whole unseemly creation of this Frankenstienian spendfest.

Judged by his own standards, President Obama’s $787 billion economic stimulus program is deeply disappointing.

Samuelson has more bad news for those who that the trillion dollars would do anything before the next election cycle.

His [Obama’s] politics compromise the program’s economics. Look at the numbers . . . At his news conference, Obama argued (inaccurately) that the two goals don’t conflict. Consider, he said, the retrofitting of federal buildings to make them more energy efficient. "We’re creating jobs immediately," he said.

Yes — but not many. The stimulus package includes $5.5 billion for overhauling federal buildings. The CBO estimates that only 23 percent of that would be spent in 2009 and 2010.

Politics Over Principle

Were Samuelson not on the left, one imagines, his critique of Barry’s first major act as president would be scathing.

By using the stimulus for unrelated policy goals, spending will be delayed and diluted. There’s another downside: "Temporary" spending increases for specific programs, as opposed to block grants, will be harder to undo, worsening the long-term budget outlook.

The reason so many are vowing to attend Tea Parties to protest wasteful spending, skyrocketing debt, transfer of wealth, and creeping socialism is because we cherish freedom, not because we’re greedy.  Most of the people at the rallies have a net worth that dwarfed by Obama’s cabinet’s daily checking account balances.  We know the value of a dollar, and we to keep the few we earn.

It’s Socialism, Stupid

Obama is an old-time socialist with new-fangled toys what whir and sizzle.  But the magic is getting old fast.

What a tiny, tiny honeymoon for Uncle Barry’s Adding Machine Stimulator Regulation Gimmick.  Got my cynicism early, wouldn’t you?

Nationwide Chicago Tea Parties

St. Louis Tea Party official event page

The list of cities with Tea Party protests scheduled for this Friday, February 27, is growing by the minute. I wanted to point out some important links and facts.

#TCOT and Patrick Leahy have done an outstanding job pulling this together in a very short time. [Facebook]

Thanks to Bill Whittle and PJTV who are doing an top job of covering the events.  (I’ll be a guest on Bill Whittle’s upcoming show.)

I just heard from Vincent David Jericho of KSGF in Springfield, MO.  He’s rapidly pulling together an event in that city for lunchtime Friday.

Be Effective.  If you go to a Tea Party, please know the theme and talking points.  Be ready to handle the media like a pro.   Your event’s Facebook page will have talking points.  Pick your favorites and have them ready when someone asks why your at the protest and what you want to tell the President, Congress, and your fellow Americans.

Watch the weather for Friday (or whatever day your Tea Party is scheduled).  St. Louis is forecast to be 45 and cloudy, so please dress appropriately.

Bring tea bags, but please don’t pollute.  The tea leaves are bio-degradable; the bags and strings are not.

Bring signs.   Ideas:

  • Stimulate This!
  • Get Out Of My Wallet!
  • $2 Trillion and all I got was a tax increase
  • A trillion here, a trillion there, pretty soon you’re talking a real depression
  • Hope and Change looks a lot like Despair and Stagnation

(Please post more ideas for sign slogans.)

Have Fun:  When was the last time conservatives took to the streets in cities all across America?  We’re standing for Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Lincoln, Reagan, even Kennedy.  What would Buckley or Friedman or Ayn Rand say about these times and this legislation?

Say it for them!  Be their voices.

Thanks, everyone, for digging in.

More on Malkin.

Thanks to Gateway Pundit for the plug last night.  (Sorry I’m so late with this acknowledgement.)

Tweet you slogan ideas to #teapartyslogans.

Thank you, and spread the word.  We want our money back, dammit!

*****Original Post Follows*****

(Sorry this post is sloppy, but events are developing rapidly.)

**UPDATE**  St. Louisans, listen to Dana Radio (97.1 FM) at 8:00 p.m. tonight, Sunday, February 22. Patrick Leahy of Top Conservatives on Twitter and Dana will discuss this Tea Party wave.

Also, I’ve started a Facebook Group to keep in touch.

***We now return to our regular blogging***

UPDATE 2:  Let’s try to do this Friday, February 27, as part of a National Tea Party protest.  Already more than 15 cities involved.  Look here or on the Facebook page or follow #teaparty on Twitter for location and time.

UPDATE 3:  Facebook event page has all the details.

National Chicago Tea Party Page.

Thanks to Michelle Malkin for popularizing the Tea Party Protest.

Who’s up for it?

I’m thinking March 14 before the downtown St. Patrick’s Day parade.

  • Toss some tea into the Mississippi
  • Run 3.2 miles
  • Freeze for an hour
  • Drink some Jameson’s and Mich Ultra

If Seattle and Chicago can find enough patriots to oppose Obama’s socialization plans, St. Louis sure can.

Track progress here, on Facebook’s #dontgo group, or follow #dontgo and #teaparty on Twitter.

And, Look!  Someone’s written a recipe for a Tea Party.

How ’bout this;

Date:  Saturday, March 14, 10:00 a.m.  Friday, February 27, 11:00 AM
Where:  Steps of the Arch, Wharf Street
Bring:  5-10 friends, signs, and tea (but not in bags)
After Party:  Everywhere.

Obama Loses Support Faster Than Any President in Modern History

From his inauguration to the end of his first month in office, President Obama has dropped between 5 and 7 percentage points in approval according to Fox News and Rasmussen, respectively.  That’s the largest first month drop in approval rating of any president since polling began.

President Day 1 % Month 1 % Change
Truman 87 85 -2
Eisenhower 70 72 2
Kennedy 73 74 1
Johnson 76 76 0
Nixon 61 61 0
Ford 59 58 -1
Carter 69 67 -2
Reagan 60 62 2
Bush 41 57 59 2
Clinton 55 52 -3
Bush 43 57 56 -1
Obama 65 60 -5

This drop could portend bad news for the Obama administration.  Of the 5 presidents who lost popularity their first month in office, on Truman and Clinton won re-election.  Both were helped by Republican Congresses.  In Clinton’s case, the Republican Congress passed a flurry of popular, conservative laws, all of which Clinton signed and took credit for.  In the case of Truman, the unpopular Republican Congress, and a weak liberal opponent in Thomas Dewey, gave Truman’s populism more credibility than it deserved.

Barring a major plebiscitory reversal in 2010, Obama will go into the 2012 election with no scapegoats and no Congressional help.  The Democrat Congress under Reid and Pelosi is the least popular since polling began, and Reid and Pelosi promise to deliver more of what made them so unpopular.

Moreover, Obama seems incapable of making good decisions as President.  In addition to his numerous failed cabinet appointment, unpopular Executive Orders, and botched stimulus bill, Obama is poised to plunge the world into economic depression by raising taxes and unleashing the largest expansion of federal regulations in history.  The American automobile industry is doomed to either extinction or nationalization, either of which will make the American car a rare thing.

Conservatives, and no-so-conservatives, are lining up to paint the land with Tea Parties protesting Obama’s rapid expansion of Soviet-style socialism in America.  From Senator DeMint to CNBC’s Rick Santelli, the people are fed up with the vacuous Obama already.
